What age should my child start Hifz?

Published 25 September 2026 · Rahber Institute teaching team

In short

Readiness matters more than age. A child who reads Quran fluently with basic tajweed and can focus for 30 minutes is usually ready to begin Hifz, often around 7–10 years old.

  • Fluent reading comes before Hifz.
  • Daily revision matters as much as new lessons.
  • Balance Hifz with schoolwork from the start.

Signs your child is ready

  • Reads Quran fluently from the mushaf
  • Knows basic tajweed rules
  • Enjoys memorising surahs
  • Can sit and focus for 30 minutes

Hifz alongside UK school

Many UK children do Hifz part-time with daily lessons after school. Steady daily progress plus revision (murajaah) is more sustainable than big weekend sessions.

Parents also ask

How long does Hifz take part-time?

It varies widely by child and schedule. Part-time students often take several years; consistency matters more than speed.
