Common Tajweed mistakes children make (and how to fix them)

Published 26 September 2026 · Rahber Institute teaching team

In short

The most common mistakes are mixing similar-sounding letters, cutting long vowels short and skipping ghunnah. Slow, corrected practice with a teacher fixes them.

  • Similar letters are the biggest challenge for English speakers.
  • Slow reading prevents most mistakes.
  • Correct early before habits set.

Mistakes teachers hear often

  • Mixing ح and ه, or ع and ء
  • Saying ق like ك
  • Cutting madd (long vowels) too short
  • Skipping ghunnah on noon and meem
  • Rushing through stops

Why English speakers find this hard

Several Arabic letters have no English equivalent, so children naturally swap them for sounds they know. Hearing a teacher and repeating slowly trains the ear.

Home practice

Five minutes daily reading slowly aloud, with the teacher's corrections in mind, is more useful than long rushed sessions.

When should Tajweed start?

Basic Tajweed starts during Noorani Qaida, and deeper rules follow once your child reads fluently.
