Balancing screen time and Quran time for children

Published 26 September 2026 · Rahber Institute teaching team

In short

Put Quran before screens, not after. A simple rule like 'Quran lesson first, then free screen time' works better than long debates every evening.

  • Quran first, screens after.
  • Use the same device for lessons, then switch to family rules.
  • Model it yourself — put your phone away during lessons.

Simple house rules that work

  • No games until the Quran lesson or revision is done
  • Devices charge outside bedrooms at night
  • One screen-free family time each day, such as after Maghrib

Make screens help

Listening to a favourite reciter in the car or at bedtime helps children learn correct pronunciation. Keep it short and pick one surah they are learning.

Avoid turning Quran into a punishment

Never use extra Quran as a punishment for too much screen time. Children should link Quran with calm and love, not with being in trouble.

Parents also ask

Are online Quran classes just more screen time?

They use a screen, but it is live, interactive learning with a teacher — very different from scrolling or games.
