How do I start reading the Quran?

Last updated 25 September 2026 · Rahber Institute teaching team

Short answer

To start reading the Quran, learn the 28 Arabic letters and their sounds, work through a structured primer such as Noorani Qaida, then begin reading short surahs from Juz Amma with a teacher who corrects your pronunciation. Most beginners can read slowly from the Quran within 3–6 months of regular practice.

Typical path for a new reader
StageWhat you learn
1. Alphabet28 letters, their shapes and correct sounds
2. HarakatShort vowels: fatha, kasra, damma, and sukoon
3. Joining lettersHow letters change shape inside words
4. Long vowels & tanweenMadd letters, double vowels, shaddah
5. Short surahsReading Juz Amma slowly with correction
6. Basic tajweedNoon sakinah, meem sakinah, qalqalah, madd

Step 1: Learn the Arabic letters

Start with the sounds, not just the shapes. Several letters (such as ح, ع, ق, ض) have no English equivalent, so hearing them from a teacher matters more than reading about them.

Step 2: Use a structured primer

Noorani Qaida takes you from single letters to full words in a fixed order. It is the most common starting book for UK children and adults.

Step 3: Read short surahs with correction

Once you can join letters, begin with Surah Al-Fatiha and the short surahs at the end of the Quran. Read aloud to a teacher; self-study alone often locks in mistakes.

Step 4: Practise little and often

  • 10–20 minutes daily beats one long weekly session
  • Read aloud, not silently
  • Revise yesterday's page before starting a new one
  • Listen to a clear reciter reading the same passage

Frequently asked questions

Can I start reading the Quran as an adult?

Yes. Adults usually progress faster through Noorani Qaida than children because they practise with more focus.

Should I start with English translation or Arabic?

You can do both. Reading the translation builds understanding; learning Arabic reading lets you recite in salah and read the original text.

How long does it take to start reading?

With 3–5 short lessons a week, most beginners read slowly from the Quran in 3–6 months.
