How do I teach my child to pray salah?

Last updated 25 September 2026 · Rahber Institute teaching team

Short answer

Teach your child salah by praying where they can see you, helping them memorise Al-Fatiha and a few short surahs, practising the movements together, and building a gentle daily routine. The Prophet ﷺ advised instructing children to pray from age seven.

A gradual approach
AgeFocus
4–6Copying parents, learning Al-Fatiha by listening
7–9One or two prayers daily, wudu, short surahs
10+All five prayers, understanding what they recite

Keep it positive

  • Praise effort, not perfection
  • Pray together as a family when possible
  • Use a prayer chart with small rewards

Frequently asked questions
